Happy Holi.

How many of you have witnessed the days when we had only one TV channel , that was DD- National ? Well, I am one of the them who did.

Anyway, why remembering those boring days? Boring they were ??? Hmm, not at all. Excitement were bigger actually. But that’s the point of debate for some next time.

Today evening, I was at a place where the host was having only one option on their TV.
DD.
We watched DD.
First, there was a program in Gujarati ‘Aa Showkh Chhee Shaandar’ – ( What an amazing hobby… If I’d have to translate )
An artiste (not professional) told about his hobby of Origamy, Japanese Art of Paper Folding. He explained the origin of Art, the types, the techniques and almost everything. While talking, he made some beautiful objects demonstrating the Art. Show was hosted by a lady who was soft spoken with very natural flow with sweetness of the Gujarati Language.
Then came the news on National Channel in English. The reader was Ms. Sakal Bhatt. News were 1. PM’s Saudi Visit 2. Storm and flood situation in European nations. 3. Holi celebration in country 4. On going Hockey World cup.
No loudness anywhere. Coverage on PM’s visit was marvelous. With political and economical details. So as the flow, clarity and pronunciation of the reader. Same depth was observed in Hockey world-cup coverage. That too without being boring.
Just after that, the same news were delivered by Mr. Srivastav in Hindi. Performance was same.
The gujarati drama was started after that based on some story of Rabindranath Tagore.
Meanwhile, there was no any Commercial attack.
We had Amir Khan on TV twice with a message ATITHI DEVO BHAVA.
Another advertisements were also Government Ads with message of Energy Conservation.

2 hours we watched TV without touching Remote Control. In fact, without thinking about Remote Control. I know, you will argue : What the hell was the need to touch it when there was no option at all.

Right.

But I am still thinking. Do we need options which add no Value at all ? And that too for just to have Options?

The morning of 12th June'2009 marked a darkest day in the history of Surat City. A minor girl was bruatally gang-raped by some criminals in the wee hours.

Today, on 19th Februarly'2010 the judgement came. All three criminals get life-time imprisonment and 1,00,000/- fine each.

The criminals caught within hours and interrogation revealed the horrible truth of past crimes committed by the same gang.

Now the fear is spreading that there are some other gangs are also involved in such type of evil business.

As the days passes by and more shocks are being revealed, it's sure that it's just a tip of an iceberg.

More than 8 months. Hon. Home Minister Amit Shah promised us justice in 15 days.

Crime branch has submitted scientific charge-sheet of 380 pages in court in this 17 year old girl gang-rape case on 25th July.

Statements of 70 witnesses with 8 main witnesses in the case. The crime has been marked under 9 different pinal codes.

Though, the dealth-panelty would not have been a surprise considering the nature of crime, this judgement has more or less satisfied the citizen and would help in improving the image of Police department and Juridiciary.

Series of Shame : A Shameless Sandesh

I was literally shocked when my 8 year kid came to me and shown me a newsprint and telling me : Papa, we can win 4 lac rupees.
I read. It was from Sandesh newspaper. They circulated that print( in full size newspaper pages ) in schools, shouting to kids for filling up the form inside and getting their parents subscribed for Sandesh Daily Newspaper. Their scheme may of publishing some hint daily, which a student would use to complete a scrap book and finally some DRAW would be there to select a winner.
What my kid, obviously, didn't understant that the Prize amount is total for all the categories.
This is the case of the most shameless emotional blackmailing by using the sentiments of our kids for such a ridiculous marketing as a tool.
I hope school management also show some maturity to avoid such kind of things.

It was 8.15PM. After leaving office, I took a turn at now-shortened-Gujarat-Gas circle and heard siren. In rear-view mirror, I seen an 108. I tried to take my van in left, by giving signals and slowed the speed. 108 was at same distance. Meanwhile, I was on the bridge now and some vehicles overtook taking the advantage of my left-sided position. Finally, 108 crossed me and I took my van behind it. Siren was still on and the vehicles (read cars) were also on in their routine speed. Nobody cared to give a pass. Just as any other vehicle was behind, everyone was driving without giving a damn. The bridge was over. 108 took right while I took lower to Athwa-gate.

E-mail : Are we killing it ?

It can be an over-reaction of recent experiences on E-mails. A Gmail account of our friend, after published on MyCitySurat.com, got flooded with SPAMs.
In fact, we got the message from him to remove his posting from MyCitySurat.com . We have removed it, but as a natural process, we asked him the reason and the fact came to knowledge.
Rabindranath Togore once said : If you shut the windows to keep the Aasatyaa out, Satya will also remain out.
E-mail is a very useful tool for communication but over-exploitaion and lack of basic ethics will kill it prematurely (at least, it's true that it's in infant-stage in India).
Don't you feel the same thing is happening with Mobiles and SMS ?
Let the good sense prevail.

Scientists in Cambridge have made a significant step towards developing a so-called “artificial pancreas” system for managing type 1 diabetes in children.

The team has developed and successfully tested a new algorithm, providing a stepping stone to home testing for the artificial pancreas.

The new study published on Friday in The Lancet shows that using an artificial pancreas system overnight can significantly reduce the risk of hypoglycemia, when blood glucose levels drop dangerously low, while sleeping.

These so-called “hypos” are a major concern for children and adults with type 1 diabetes.

An artificial pancreas system combines a continuous glucose monitor and an insulin pump, both already on the market, and uses a sophisticated algorithm to calculate the appropriate amount of insulin to deliver based on the real-time glucose readings.

As well as obviating the need for multiple daily finger prick tests and insulin injections, the artificial pancreas should offer better control of blood glucose levels overnight.

In the new study, 17 children and teenagers aged between five and 18 with type 1 diabetes were studied during 54 nights at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

The team measured how well the artificial pancreas system controlled glucose levels compared with the children’s regular continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) pump, which delivers insulin at preselected rates.

The study included nights when the children went to bed after eating a large evening meal or having done early evening exercise.

Both are challenging to manage, a large evening meal because it can lead to so-called “insulin stacking” and, as a result, a potentially dangerous drop in blood glucose levels later in the night, and late afternoon or early evening exercise because it increases the body’s need for glucose in the early morning and can therefore increase the risk of night time hypoglycaemia.

The pooled results showed the artificial pancreas kept blood glucose levels in the normal range for 60 per cent of the time, compared with 40 per cent for the CSII.

The artificial pancreas halved the time that blood glucose levels fell below 3.9mmol/l — the level considered as mild hypoglycaemia. It also prevented blood glucose falling below 3.0mmol/l, which is defined as significant hypoglycaemia, compared with nine hypoglycaemia events in the control studies.

According to lead author Dr Roman Hovorka of the Institute of Metabolic Science at the University of Cambridge: “Our results show that commercially-available devices, when coupled with the algorithm we developed, can improve glucose control in children and significantly reduce the risk of hypos overnight.”

“This is the first randomised study showing the potential benefit of the artificial pancreas system overnight using commercially-available sensors and pumps. Our study provides a stepping stone for testing the system at home.”

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic, life threatening condition which is on the increase in the U.K., particularly in the under fives.

Children and adults require multiple daily insulin injections or pump infusions and many finger prick blood tests each day.

However, treatment with insulin brings with it the risk of hypoglycaemia, one of the most feared short—term complications of type 1 diabetes for children and their parents.

Recent technological developments in blood glucose monitors and devices for continuous administration of insulin — such as those used in this study — can improve blood glucose control, but more needs to be done.

Rahman, Gulzar, Tanvi share Grammy for 'Jai ho'

Music maestro A.R. Rahman shared the Grammy award for the best motion picture song "Jai ho" with veteran lyricist Gulzar and Tanvi Shah who wrote the Spanish lyrics for it.

Rahman, Gulzar and Shah made the Indian presence felt at the 52nd edition of the Annual Grammy Awards held at the Staples Centre here.

"Jai ho", that has won various international awards including the Oscars last year, is from Danny Boyle's rags-to-riches film "Slumdog millionaire". The song was sung by Sukhvinder Singh, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Vijay Prakash along with Rahman and Shah.

India is the future. I mean that in one positive way and one, slightly negative way. Let's be positive first. The 21st century will be the Indian century. In this century India will become the largest economy in the world (again) as well as the most populous with India's population likely to exceed China's and settle around 1.5 billion people. You think Mumbai traffic is bad now? Courtesy of the one child policy, China's population will grow old and stabilise around 1.2 billion. It is said that China will grow old before it grows rich. Indeed, being the most populous country is the main reason that India will have the largest economyÂ—income per head will still be lower than in a great many places.
Domestic economic power will bring, slowly, international power. The rupee has a good chance of being the world's reserve currencyÂ— unless the US follows a 'scorched earth' policy and allows a change to the system of single dominant currencies just as the dollar is being booted out. No worry. Being the world's reserve currency has its downs as well as ups. And India's rise is probably good for the world, too. Of course, every hegemon considers their hegemony good for the world. Remember Kipling?

What a shame ... When the countrymen are waiting for the government to take strict action against terrorism, it is playing such cheapest techniques of diverting the issues by asking resignations and announcing the price cut in Petrol.
This is again a proof, this government is thinking all countrymen nothing but stupids and beggers.
In our Diwali editorial, we said that price-cut would have come as a gift. This government is now using this as a bribe.

As for example most Surtis do not know what is "BEST BUY" logo for under shopping. Many might not even have heard of it. So why to misguide people instead you could hav kept links to shopping places in Surat like Dhiraj Sons, Big Bazar, Iskon Mall, etc. Same way you can make the changes for other sub categories. Please do not give wrong information. By the way I really appreciate you as the website is reall cool & has got lots of inofrmation.
Also one more suggestion from my side which you can add is updating most recent schedule of trains from & to Surat city.

Clean the station please

I regret to say this but our railway station is one of the dirtiest station i've ever seen,,,
its not clean at all,, you check out the platforms, check out the tracks, its not clean,, you can see hell lot of human crap on the tracks,, muddy tracks, the concrete beneath the railway tracks is not solid,, which can cause disaster any time,, gutters are open, water stuck everywhere with dirt all around,, there are no dustbins on the station to throw water bottles, food packets coffee glasses and stuff and so they are thrown on the tracks instead,,,
it stinks when we walk towards the platfom from the sub way,, officers who are given the responsibility keep the railway station clean seems not coming to the station,, because it does not seem that they can see what i've been checking out almost everytime i visit the station,,,
i am a frequent traveller from surat to mumbai and other places,, They say that a railway station is a gateway to the city,, but if the gateway of my city is dirty then who will say that my city is the second cleanest city in india,, boss i am sorry its no more a cleanest city,, and who ever claims to say that my city is one of the cleanest city then "hey check my railway station",,, there are no surveillance camera's for the security,, we hardly find police on the platforms,, there are so many commuters travelling everyday from my city to different part of the state and country,,
please forward this blog to municipal commisioner, or whoever who can understand the severity of this issue, please do something about our railway station it needs and it is suppose to be clean,, we have money more than any other municipalities in india,, we are the richest city in india, we dont have an air port think about this how does it look when people come to surat and check our gateway so dirty and stinky,, i care for my city and wants it to be clean. my number is 09967791099,, please do something about this sir or madam.
Make our city look like its actually has the best GDP growth rate in india and make it the best city in india,, keeping the cleanliness and safety as a perpective in mind.

Our User Expression on Auto Rickshaw Strike

how valid was the rickshaw strike?
how many of the surtis supported it?
now just tell me how much can a governmetn do when oil prices around the world are zooming up... last here they were hovering around 60$ a barrel but today its around 130$, it even touched 135$ last week.... a friend whom i talked to also gave his opinion when the rickshaws were converted from petrol to cng, their cost reduced by one-fifth still the passengers fares remained the same all of this time. Even the petrol-diesal prices are gonna increase insometime unless the politics play a part leaving the state run oil firms bleeding in deep red losses. and who gave rickshawallahs the right to damage the local buses, isnt there away to protest peacefully? also i compeltely agree with the expression posted on this site aboutthe railway station, I would like to add the nuisance of travel agents on the reservation windows....even after the token syste 70% of the area is filled with them.
i think its high time we "SurtiS" improve our civic sense....and ask for these basic rights, a little time from the busy lives of making money n merry... the surti lalas deserve it.. what say?
